Two months ago, I picked up a small yellow book in the business section of the bookstore. It was my second Jeffrey Gitomer book called The Little Gold Book of Yes! Attitude. It was an engaging, easy read and at first I dismissed it as stuff that I had read before. After reading the book, I felt inspired to try two things. The first was I decided to have a literal Yes! attitude at work. I always bring friendliness and enthusiasm and have been doing okay. But something about having a personal Yes! attitude seemed like something I just had to try.
Here's how I used that attitude. I decided that whatever my boss asked me to do, I would answer and mean Yes! I would not only agree, I would agree happily. Over the past two years in my part-time job, I could go a whole month without a real conversation with my boss. In fact, at my recent performance evaluation (which was excellent) we both realized that we rarely talk to each other about the job.
Within a week of bringing my Yes! attitude to work, my boss became a regular visitor to my office and I began to get interesting assignments. I was given lead position on several things.
The second thing from the book that I did was to substitute an hour of reading for an hour of TV. I decided to commit an hour a day to reading in a subject that I was interested in using towards my career. I was thinking at that time that it would prepare me to interview better for a position I was interested in but that didn't even exist yet.
So, for two months I studied my chosen career target.
A little back story. Right before I read this book, I had decided to give my notice and look for another job. I just felt like my job was going nowhere. I didn't hate it, I just wanted more. More responsibility, more hours, and of course more money. After I read the book, I became more engaged in my work and somehow the notice was never given.
Behind the scenes, things were taking place. I kept on with my Yes! actions and unbeknown to me, people were taking actions to create my new position. A position was created for me, in the area that I had been studying, working with people that I really like, and doing things I enjoy yet will force me to grow in experience and skills.
I know my committed and certain actions of the previous year and a half also set the scene for this change of events. However, I know in my heart, that following my Yes! steps is what dramatically changed things quickly. Yesterday, I was given an offer that was more than I had ever expected and is in line with what I love and believe in. I don't know if Jeffrey's words will affect anyone else this way but I have to pass this resource along.
